Vocational Pathways Information

Pathway Options for School Leavers

Choosing the right path after school can feel overwhelming for young people and their families. Vocational Pathways provide a clear framework that links NCEA qualifications to the entry level skills and knowledge sought after by employers and training providers.

What Are Vocational Pathways?

Developed by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Pathways show how NCEA standards connect to broad areas of employment. They help students and their families see how their achievements align with job and study options.

At EmployNZ, a young person who gains 80 Level 2 credits (including 20 credits relating to literacy and numeracy and up to 60 credits specific to their Vocational Pathway) achieves a Vocational Pathways Award that sits alongside their NCEA Level 2 qualification. This shows employers and training providers that they are prepared for further training, apprenticeships, or employment in that sector.

Why They Are Useful

For students, Vocational Pathways make it easier to see how school subjects relate to future opportunities. This can help them choose courses that suit their interests and give them confidence that their learning is purposeful.

For parents, they provide reassurance that a young person’s study programme has a clear direction. For career counsellors, the pathways give a practical structure for guiding subject selection and planning.

EmployNZ's Vocational Pathway Programmes

EmployNZ supports young people who have left school and are ready for more practical, hands-on learning. Our programmes are funded through the Youth Guarantee scheme, which is fully funded for eligible learners.

We offer courses that align directly with the Vocational Pathways framework, helping students achieve a qualification, build their confidence and gain valuable vocational skills.

EmployNZ has a range of courses that lead to Vocational Pathway Awards.

Here to Support You

Whether you are a parent, caregiver, family member or are working with youth, EmployNZ can provide clear information and practical options. Our programmes are designed to help young people progress into further training or entry level employment.

Our Recruitment and Pathway Coordinators are here to support the transition from school to EmployNZ.  They can help explain the Early Leaving Exemption process and facilitate a meeting with a relevant tutor.
