New Zealand Diploma in Information Technology – Level 5

Topics include IT Systems & Problem Solving, Networking Concepts, IT Desktop Support, and Software Development. This qualification will also help you develop the communication skills required in today’s IT environment, and to help you appreciate the needs of customers and team members.

Modules – what you will be learning about

Module 1 – IT Systems and Problem Solving

You will learn how to install, configure, upgrade, troubleshoot and repair PC systems. This includes basic knowledge of desktop and portable systems, peripherals such as printers, basic networking concepts, and common preventative maintenance and safety procedures. You will also learn about Windows Desktops (Windows 10) for installing, basic configuration and repairing PC systems.

Module 2 – Networking Concepts

This module will teach you how to support personal computers in a networked environment, as well as learning the fundamentals of supporting a small Local Area Network. At the completion of this module you will be capable of supporting a small LAN, and understand how large networks are structured.

Module 3 – IT Desktop Support

You will gain baseline technical knowledge of the Internet, Intranet and Extranet technologies. At the completion of this module you will have an understanding of Internet basics, Internet clients, development, networking, security and business concepts.

Module 4 – Software Development

You will learn desktop configuration, support and troubleshooting skills, as well as being introduced to different aspects and features of the Windows Workstation environment. You will learn how to apply the principles of software development to create simple working applications, and about application compatibility
and support.

Programme Details


New Zealand Diploma in Information Technology (Level 5) (120 Credits)

Entry Criteria

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Applicants must have completed the New Zealand qualification standard NCEA level 2 equivalent in their home country. Subjects must have included English, Reading, Writing and Maths.

All applicants will be required to complete an enrolment form and may be interviewed in person or via telephone or skype to evaluate their suitability for the programme.

Applicants who have English as a second language must have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 5.5 with no individual band score lower than 5.0 in a single test event (or equivalent).         

Programme content

The content of the programme consists of four modules that include: Technical skills covering IT hardware concepts and troubleshooting, networking, software and system administration, database fundamentals, interface design, IT security and service management. You will learn core skills covering information systems concepts and practices, interaction design, software development concepts, interpersonal skills and problem. At the completion of the programme you will be able to apply technical skills covering IT hardware concepts, troubleshooting, networking, software and systems administration, database fundamentals, interface design, IT security and service management. 

BYOD – students will be required to bring their own device, please check the specifications required during enrolment.

Future Study Pathways

This qualification provides a pathway to a specialist Level 6 IT qualification including the New Zealand Diploma in Systems Administration (Level 6) or other undergraduate qualifications.

Employment Options

This qualification will prepare you for a range of employment opportunities including as a computer technician, help desk and technical support officer, network engineer (entry level), applications support analyst (entry level), and many other IT support roles.
